Laundry List

Here is a true story: it is approaching 11pm on a Friday night during the Christmas season.  I am nursing a (very weak) eggnog and brandy, listening to my dad’s “Chrismix Vol. II” on the CD player, basking in the glow of the tree…and folding three loads of laundry…and blogging about it.

Here is another true story: it has been over a month since my last post.  This is a new low.  And believe me, I’ve written a hundred blog posts in my head.  But there is simply NO TIME (as evidenced by the scene described above) to get them into the laptop.  Such is life.

To give credit where credit is due, my husband is the one who actually did the laundry.  But we’re having people over for a holiday dinner tomorrow night and the prospect of folding laundry tonight (bad) was actually a lot better than the prospect of our enormous laundry basket staring at me mournfully all day tomorrow (bad bad bad).  So here I am, holding up my share of the agreement.

What has transpired in the past month-plus?  I know you’re wondering.  Well, here’s the thing: I’ve been taking care of my kids and working.  And not much else.  Babyman took his first cooking class (awesome); we had our first three-alarm family-style meltdown in the parking garage (less-than-awesome); Babyman worked his way through his own post-partum depression, involving much peeing on the floor and refusal to go to sleep until 10pm; and, somewhere along the way, I reconnected with all that is (dare I say it?) FUN about this parenting gig.

It’s true.  In fact, I have drafted blog posts about the challenges — and they are many (Do people really have more than two children?  Why??  How???) — but at the end of the day (okay, the month), the fact is that I am deriving so much enjoyment from my kids right now.  Even the “problems” (sass, not listening, bad manners) are an opportunity of sorts: for example, in just a few short weeks, we’ve reached a place where the mere phrase “I’m going to count to three!” results in action (besides my actually counting to three).

‘Tis the season to count our blessings.  So of all the drafts still in draft form, I’m publishing this one: I’m happy and grateful.  I have very little free time, but for all the right reasons.
